Create an AccountHiking Etiquette: Know the Rules of the Trail
Welcome to the Columbia Hike Society! Before you embark on your adventure, please review these essential hiking etiquette tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
1. Leave No Trace
• Pack it in, pack it out: Always take your rubbish with you, including food wrappers and bottles.
• Stay on the trail: Stick to the designated paths to prevent erosion and protect the environment.
• Respect wildlife: Observe animals from a distance and avoid feeding them to ensure they stay wild and healthy.
2. Yield to Others
• Uphill hikers have the right of way: Give way to those going uphill by stepping aside.
• Be courteous: Greet fellow hikers with a smile or hello as you pass.
• Cyclists and runners: If the trail is shared, be aware of others and step aside to let them pass.
3. Follow the Guide’s Instructions
• Stay with the group: Our guides are here to ensure your safety and enjoyment. Please follow their instructions at all times.
• Arrive on time: Be punctual! Late arrivals may delay the group or result in you missing the hike.
• Listen to safety briefings: Guides will provide important information before and during the hike. Pay attention and ask questions if needed.
4. Keep Noise to a Minimum
• Avoid loud music: Use headphones if you’d like to listen to music. Let the natural sounds of the environment be part of your experience.
• Limit loud conversations: Keep your voice low to maintain the peaceful atmosphere on the trail.
5. Respect Nature and Other Hikers
• Leave what you find: Avoid picking flowers, disturbing rocks, or taking anything from the environment.
• Respect signage and boundaries: Stay within designated areas and follow any posted guidelines to protect nature.
6. Be Prepared
• Bring enough water and snacks: Ensure you have enough food and water to stay hydrated and fuelled for the hike. Reusable bottles are encouraged to reduce waste.
• Dress appropriately: Wear suitable shoes and clothing for the weather and trail conditions. Always pack layers or a jacket in case of changing weather.
• Know the trail: Make sure you are aware of the hike’s length, duration, and difficulty. Confirm with the guide if you have any concerns.
7. Respect Trail Capacity
• Reservations are required: Since we book hikes based on group numbers, ensure you’ve reserved your spot in advance. This helps us maintain safe group sizes and guarantees space for everyone.
• Stick to your booking: If you can no longer attend, please let us know in advance so we can adjust accordingly.
